Research Interest

Neuroethology is the evolutionary and comparative approach to study the neurobiological basis of animal behaviour. I'm interested in neural mechanisms of sensory processing and motor control and especially in the largely uncharted central nervous circuits that extract and detect relevant features from the sensory input to initiate appropriate behavioural responses. My research combines behavioural analysis with in vivo electrophysiology and functional neuroanatomy in orthopteran insects, which are excellent model organisms that allow to investigate the principles of intrinsic and synaptic processing mechanisms in relatively small neural networks at the level of identified neurons.

Research Topics:

  • Evolution of behaviour by modifications of the underlying neuronal circuitry
  • Neuroethology of acoustic communication in insects
  • Auditory feature detection for acoustic pattern recognition
  • Directional hearing and phonotactic behaviour
  • Central motor pattern generation and corollary discharge
  • Mechanotransduction and afferent signal coding in insect ears
  • Sublethal effects of pesticides on neuronal processing and behaviour

Research Methods:

  • intracellular microelectrode recordings and iontophoretic dye injection
  • extracellular nerve recordings with hook and suction electrodes
  • EMG recordings
  • Behavioural analysis (e.g. sound recordings, phonotaxis)
  • Behavioural and neurophysiological neuropharmacology
  • Neuroanatomy and CLSM (e.g. nerve backfill, local tracer injection)
